Abdominal adhesion surgery

Ankle ligament repair

Ankle ligament repair is a surgical procedure designed to treat chronic ankle instability, a condition where the ankle frequently feels wobbly and "gives way." This instability typically occurs after repeated or severe ankle sprains have stretched or torn the ligaments on the outside of the ankle, leaving them too loose to effectively support the joint.

Ankle replacement

Ankle replacement, also known as total ankle arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure used to treat ankle arthritis, relieving pain and restoring function. During the operation, an orthopaedic surgeon removes the damaged bone and worn-out cartilage from the ankle joint and replaces them with a prosthesis made of metal and a durable plastic spacer.

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion

An anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a common and highly successful surgical procedure performed to treat nerve compression in the neck (cervical spine) that is causing persistent pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a ligament located in the middle of your knee that connects the front of your shin bone to the back of your thigh bone and helps to stabilise the knee. Tears (or ruptures) to this ligament can occur when making sharp twists and turns, causing the knee to ‘give way’ or collapse. This is commonly as a result of an injury whilst skiing, or a sporting injury. An ACL reconstruction replaces the ligament with a piece of suitable tissue from elsewhere in your body (an autograft) or from a donor (allograft).

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a ligament in the middle of your knee that connects the front of shin bone thigh bones to the back of your thigh bone and helps to stabilise the knee. Tears (or ruptures) to this ligament can occur when making sharp twists and turns, causing the knee to ‘give way’ or collapse. An ACL repair stitches the damaged ligament back together.

Anterior resection

Anterior resection is a surgical procedure to remove the diseased portion of your bowel and rectum (back passage). The remaining healthy end of the colon is reconnected to the remaining part of the rectum, creating a join known as an anastomosis.

Anterior segment reconstruction

The front part of your eye including your iris (coloured part of your eye), cornea and lens are called the anterior segment. Anterior segment reconstruction is a surgical procedure to repair or rebuild the front structures of the eye, including the cornea, iris, and lens. This procedure is typically required after severe trauma, such as a penetrating injury, or due to major complications from a previous eye surgery.

Antral washout

If you have chronic (constant) sinus infections your consultant may recommend antral washout.

Aortic aneurysm repair

An aneurysm is a thickening or bulge in the wall of an artery. In some cases surgical repair of the aorta may be necessary if an aneurysm is present.

Aortic Root Repair

Aortic root repair is a complex type of open-heart surgery performed to fix the base of the aorta, which is the large artery that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. This procedure is most commonly required to treat an aortic aneurysm (a dangerous bulge in the artery wall) or an aortic dissection (a tear in its lining) at this critical location.

Aortic stent grafts

An aortic stent graft is a medical device composed of a fabric tube supported by a metal mesh frame, used to repair the body's main artery, the aorta. Its primary purpose is to treat an aortic aneurysm by creating a new, reinforced channel for blood to flow through.

Aortofemoral bypass

An aortofemoral bypass is a procedure to insert artificial tubes (grafts) above blocked iliac arteries and connect the ends of the graft to your femoral arteries.

Appendicectomy

An appendicectomy is the surgical removal of the appendix, performed to treat appendicitis, which is a painful inflammation and infection of the organ. This common procedure is necessary to prevent the appendix from rupturing and causing a life-threatening infection inside the abdomen.

Aquablation® therapy

Your epididymis is a tube just above your testicles that stores sperm. Sometimes fluid builds up in this area, causing an epidigymal cyst. This is usually harmless but in some cases will need to be removed.

Excision of a ganglion

Excision of a ganglion is a common and minor surgical procedure to remove a ganglion cyst, which is a harmless, fluid-filled lump that typically develops near a joint or tendon in your hand or wrist.

Excision of skin lesion

Skin lesions are found on or just below the skin. Examples of skin lesions are epidermoid cysts, lipomata (benign tumour of fatty tissue), skin tags and moles.

Excision of spinal tumours

For patients diagnosed with a spinal tumour, surgical excision is the principal treatment aimed at removing the abnormal tissue, decompressing the spinal cord and nerves, and reducing symptoms such as pain or weakness.

Excision vaginal lumps

If lumps in your vaginal area do not respond to conservative treatment, your gynaecologist may recommend removing them. The length and complexity of this procedure will depend on the size and location of the lump.

eXroid® electrotherapy treatment

eXroid® electrotherapy is a non-surgical treatment for internal haemorrhoids. It uses a low electrical current to reduce the blood supply to the haemorrhoid so it shrinks over time. There is no heat and no cutting.

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT)

Shockwave therapy is a non-surgical treatment, and works by delivering impulses of energy, targeted to specific damaged tissues within the abnormal tendon.

Eyelid cyst removal

Fluid filled lumps that form in your upper or lower eyelids are quite common. These cysts normally disappear on their own. Occasionally the cyst becomes infected causing pain, redness and swelling.
