Our Endoscopy Unit

Attending hospital for any investigation can be an anxious time and we recognise that. We aim to make your stay with us as comfortable and stress free as possible, and hope that this page will answer some of the questions that you may have.

• If needed, we can accommodate patients to stay overnight to assist them with the bowel preparation.

Preparing for your procedure

Prior to your procedure date

• You'll be contacted by the Pre-assessment team who will discuss with you your medical/surgical history and your current medications. If you have any concerns regarding your hospital stay, please do ask one of the Pre-assessment team.
• To ensure that we meet your needs, please inform the Pre-assessment team if you have any specific needs that may affect our ability to communicate effectively with you.
• If you are having sedation for your procedure, you will need to ensure that there is someone to collect you, as you will be unable to drive yourself. You will also need someone to stay with you overnight.
• We advise you not to bring valuables into hospital. However, there is a small lockable cupboard in your room if required. Please ask either the ward team or the endoscopy staff if you require use of this. There is a television in your room and newspapers are available, but you may wish to bring a book or magazine.

On the day of your procedure

• Please book in at the main reception desk. You should bring any relevant paperwork sent by the hospital or your consultant, along with an up-to-date list of your medications.
• A member of staff will meet you in reception and take you to your bedroom. A member of the nursing team will then carry out your initial assessment, including a discussion about your medical history, recording your observations and explaining the next steps in your care journey.
• You will have an opportunity to order light refreshments for after the procedure.
• We aim to provide the best possible care experience and ensure that your stay with us is a positive one. Our staff are here to help throughout your stay. If you have any questions or require assistance, please ask any member of the team.
• Visitors are welcome to stay with you whilst you are in your bedroom. However, visitors are not permitted in the clinical area in order to protect the privacy and dignity of our patients.
• Refreshment facilities are available for visitors and a member of the ward team will be happy to direct them.
• Occasionally delays occur on the endoscopy list because a procedure takes longer than expected. The nursing team will endeavour to keep you informed throughout.

Prior to discharge

• You will be given post-procedure instructions, including contact details should you have any questions or concerns.
• We are always looking to improve the service we provide and welcome feedback about the care you receive. We would be grateful if you could take the time to complete the questionnaire provided by the ward team.
