About
John Stebbing is a Consultant Surgeon at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust in Guildford where he is also Clinical Director of the Surrey Bowel Cancer Screening Centre.
He studied medicine at St John’s College, Cambridge and Guy’s Hospital in London and qualified with Distinction in Surgery in 1987. He was awarded a MRC Clinical Training Fellowship in 1994 to pursue a period of research, which led to appointment as a Hunterian Professor (Royal College of Surgeons of England) and award of the John of Arderne Medal (Royal Society of Medicine) in 1996.
His professional focus in recent years has been in bowel cancer screening and quality in endoscopy. From 2011 to 2017, he was Chair of the Joint Advisory Group on GI Endoscopy, which is the body that awards accreditation for endoscopy services across the UK and supports training for the endoscopists of the future. He is Co-chair of the National Clinical Professional Advisory Committee for Bowel Cancer Screening.
He is a Trustee of the local charity GUTS.

Research
- During surgical training, John Stebbing was awarded a MRC Clinical Training Fellowship to pursue a period of focused research on Nitric Oxide as an important neurotransmitter in the anorectum.
- As a consultant, his main areas of research interest have been in quality assurance of endoscopy, interventions to reduce polyp burden in bowel screening participants and the impact of COVID on surgical practice.
- He is currently local Principal Investigator for the COLOPREVENT trial within bowel cancer screening.
