About

Andrew Davies is a General surgeon specialising in upper gastro-intestinal surgery (stomach, oesophagus and gallbladder) and abdominal hernia repair. His NHS practice is based at St Thomas’ hospital in London, which is one of the largest upper GI units in the UK. He has a particular interest in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for gallstones, acid reflux and hernias as well as enhanced recovery after surgery. At St Thomas’ he also performs a large number of operations for stomach and oesohageal cancer and leads the Upper GI Research programme which regularly publishes articles in high profile journals.

Andrew is on the committee of ISDE (International Society of Diseases of the oesophagus), the editorial board of the British Journal of surgery and is regularly invited to talk at national and international conferences. He is affiliated to King’s College London and is currently the Principal investigator of three on-going clinical trials. During his training he was awarded two prestigious laparoscopic fellowships to Pittsburgh, USA and Pretoria, SA. 

Andrew is married to Sophie (also a surgeon) with three children. They live in Haslemere. His interests include rugby, cricket, golf and skiing as well as spending time with the family.

Research

Andrew has an extensive research background with a first class honours Bsc, a Masters degree (with Distinction) and an MD in the staging and management of oesophageal cancer at King’s College London.  

He is on the research committee of the International Society of Disease of the Oesophagus and the Research lead for the Oesophago-gastric unit at Guy’s & St Thomas’ in London. He regularly reviews articles for leading scientific journals and is on the editorial board of the British Journal of Surgery (Europe’s most prestigious surgical journal). He has delivered numerous talks at national and international meetings.

Andrew is a contributor to numerous large international collaborations and the site principle investigator of three on-going trials. One of these studies is examining the role of exercise in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and another is a national trial looking at the role of MRI scanning in patients having gallbladder surgery.

He currently supervises four post-graduate research fellows and has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers as well as 15 articles for GP’s and patients.
