Mr Nicholas Strong is a highly experienced consultant ophthalmic surgeon who has worked for the NHS in Cumbria for 4 years and in Newcastle for 22 years. He has served as an associate medical director in both organisations. He has practiced from the Newcastle Nuffield hospital since 1996.
Mr Strong graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1984. His first post was in Windsor before registrar training in Moorfields, London. After a further senior training post in Leicester he was appointed as a consultant in Newcastle in 1992. He was the head of department for many years and the clinical chair of the group that designed the renowned Newcastle Eye Centre which opened in 1996.
He developed the high volume cataract service at Newcastle hospitals. His practice centres upon cataract and strabismus (squint) surgery and he also has an outpatient service for glaucoma and general ophthalmology problems.
He established the outreach clinics in Alnwick, Chester-le-Street and Hexham for the benefit of patients who no longer had to travel to Newcastle.
Mr Strong performs over 800 cataract operations per year on average. His cataract practice includes toric lenses (for astigmatism) and multifocal lenses.
He has often received technically challenging cases from colleagues. These include patients with advanced cataracts and patients who have difficulty lying down flat or other health concerns.
In addition his specialist services include intraocular lens exchange in patients referred to him after having had defective lenses inserted.
Mr Strong is a member of a partnership of three ophthalmologists (CESP-northeast) who work collaboratively. This means that there is always at least one consultant available to assist patients with queries or concerns.
