Robotic-arm assisted surgery provides patients with a personalised surgical plan for joint replacement surgery. The state-of-the-art Mako™ robotic arm system works alongside the surgeon from the pre-surgery planning stage through to assisting in the surgery itself in order to improve the accuracy and precision of the procedure.

Before surgery, a personalised 3D model is created based on the patient’s own CT scan, allowing the exact size and orientation of the hip or knee implant to be planned.

During the operation, the robotic arm guides the surgeon, following the customised pre-surgery plan, reducing the risk of surgical errors in bone preparation and placement of the implants.

At Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital we offer the following robot assisted orthopaedic procedures:

Recovery

Higher accuracy means the replacement fits as well as it possibly can and ensures the joint functions as normally as possible after surgery. It's been shown to result in a shorter hospital stay, quicker recovery and higher satisfaction. There's also strong evidence of decreased pain and fewer complications following surgery. Who is robotic arm surgery suitable for? Robotic arm surgery may not be appropriate for all patients. Your consultant will advise you on the best treatments for your condition.

It’s not just about the surgery. Successful surgical outcomes need personalised recovery plans. We do this through:

Our physiotherapy

If you’ve met any of our orthopaedic consultants they will tell you regular, consistent physiotherapy is the key to your recovery.

Nuffield Health is the largest provider of Physiotherapy in the UK, outside of the NHS, offering the widest range of physiotherapy services and employing some of the country’s most skilled practitioners. All of our physiotherapists are HCPC (Health & Care Professions Council) and CSP (Chartered Society of Physiotherapy) registered and have at least three years’ experience, guaranteeing you are in safe hands throughout your treatment.

Recovery Plus – a personalised recovery plan, your very own recovery coach and free gym access.

Our flagship recovery programme for post-surgery joint replacements is free of charge to private patients, not offered elsewhere in Bristol.

Recovery Plus is a scheme exclusive to Nuffield Health. You get three months free access to one of our Fitness & Wellbeing gyms, your very own recovery coach and personalised recovery plan to get you back to the life you love. Read more about Recovery Plus.

Post-surgery physiotherapy and Recovery Plus are included with your treatment. There is no charge for these services.
