Mr Mitchell is pleased to see children and adults with general ENT conditions. His sub-speciality interest is dealing with ear related problems, including hearing loss in children and adults, tinnitus, vertigo and balance disorders. In addition to general ENT procedures, he undertakes a wide range of ear surgery including stapedectomy, closed cavity surgery for cholesteatoma and surgery for Ménière's disease.
Mr Mitchell qualified from Oxford University before undertaking postgraduate ENT training in Winchester, Oxford, Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital, London and Cambridge. He was awarded the inaugural Graham Fraser Fellowship, spending six months with Professor William Gibson in Sydney, Australia developing techniques in ear surgery with particular emphasis on cochlear implantation and surgery for Meniere's disease.
He took up his post as Consultant ENT surgeon at University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust in November 2000. He provides the ENT service at Romsey Hospital.
With increasing sub-specialisation within the ENT department, Mr Mitchell is a dedicated otologist undertaking specialised ear surgery. As part of a multi-disciplinary approach, he provides the ENT input for the management of otitis media with effusion (glue ear) in children with cleft lip and palate.
He also undertakes bone-anchored hearing aid and cochlear implant procedures in children and adults as part of the University of Southampton Auditory Implant Service.
Other interests
Mr Mitchell has been an examiner with the Royal College of Surgeons of England since 2005 and has been elected as Chairman of the Court of Examiners with effect from July 2014. He is a member of the Specialist Advisory Committees in ENT and Audiovestibular Medicine overseeing training in both specialties in the UK. He is also Vice Chair of the Clinical Reference Group for Specialised Ear Services informing the National Commissioning Board and Regional Specialty Professional Advisor in ENT for the Royal College of Surgeons of England and member of the ENT UK Council.
