Carol Taylor is a familiar face at Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital. Suffering from osteoarthritis, over time she’s had both hips and knees replaced with us.

Being so pleased with the transformation of her quality of life, Carol kindly donated several artificial joint models that can be used in patient consultations to help explain procedures.

Carol tells us a bit about her experience: “I cannot begin to explain the pain and discomfort I was in before I had treatment with Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital. I had years and years of disabling osteoarthritis.  I remember tackling the stairs was more like a crawl, and if I fell, I couldn’t get myself up again. I never forget the awful crunching sound my joints made, it really affected me day-to-day.

As an NHS patient Carol has been treated by Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons Mr Wall, Mr Veysi, Mr Emerton (pictured with Carol) and soon to add Mr Vollans to that list for upcoming treatment for her shoulder.

"Having the joint replacements totally transformed my life as well as my sense of wellbeing. When you’re in pain, it’s all you can focus on and there isn’t much room for anything else. The psychological impact was quite devastating, I felt very lonely.”

After two hip replacements and two knee replacements, Carol’s life has completely turned around. “Now the pain has gone my mental wellbeing and quality of life has truly transformed, I am so happy. I have a quality of life I have not known in a long time I feel very lucky. The kindness of everyone at the hospital never cease to amaze me.”

Carol was so pleased with the dramatic change in her life, she wanted to give something back and donated several joint models:

“The models I find are really helpful in consultations, patients get a better understanding of their procedure when consultants are talking it through with them, it can help put them more at ease. It means a lot to me that I can make a difference like that.”

Carol kindly donated models for hip, knee, shoulder, elbow and wrist joints to the hospital. Hospital Director Maria Robinson said: “Carol’s kind donation will help so many patients in their consultations. These visual aids make such a difference to help patients understand their operation. We are really grateful for Carol’s gift and we’re really happy our hospital could improve Carol’s quality of life so dramatically.”

Carol adds: “It has been a difficult year for us all, if my donation helps make someone's life that little bit easier, that a little bit better -  there is no greater feeling than that.”

Big thank you from everyone at Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital to Carol for her generosity.
