Mr Rothenfluh is interested in how the adult degenerative spine transitions into an imbalanced spine. He and his co-workers have identified alignment between the pelvis and the lumbar spine as a risk factor for revision surgery after lumbar spinal fusion. This alignment can be corrected during spinal fusion surgery.
Understanding these relationships has also impacted on the technique and goals for correction of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis in order to potentially avoid or slow down degeneration of the discs in the unfused spine later in adult life. His patients directly benefit from this up-to-date knowledge.
