About

Dr Kushala Abeysekera is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist practising at Bristol Royal Infirmary. He graduated from Imperial College London with Distinction in 2011, and completed academic foundation and core medical training in London. During that time, he had the opportunity to work at centres of excellence including the Royal London Hospital, the Royal Marsden and King’s College London.

Dr Abeysekera moved to the South West in 2016 to commence his specialist training, and completed his PhD at the University of Bristol in 2022, working with the Children of the ’90s birth cohort. Following this, he was awarded the Sheila Sherlock award for best young investigator by the British Association for the Study of the Liver.

While accredited in Gastroenterology, Dr Abeysekera has a specialist interest in liver disease and liver health. He completed further higher training at the Royal Free Hospital before returning to Bristol, where he was appointed as the first Clinical Lecturer in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Bristol. He now splits his time between the University of Bristol and Bristol Royal Infirmary.

A qualified trainer in diagnostic endoscopy, he is also passionate about public health and sits on the Policy, Public Health and Advocacy committee for the European Association for the Study of the Liver, as well as the Liver Section for the British Society of Gastroenterology. In his practice, he is focused on delivering personalised holistic care for his patients, which is grounded in evidence.
