What is bariatric surgery?

Bariatric – or weight loss – surgery mainly works by altering signals that come from the gut, which control appetite. There are several surgical procedures available at our Bristol Hospital that can help you to lose weight and maintain long-term weight loss. These include:

We perform keyhole surgery to minimise recovery time and reduce the risk of infection and scarring. Your consultant surgeon will:

  • Assess your individual needs and risks
  • Discuss which option would be right for you to get the best results.

Bariatric surgery treatments are clinically proven to be the most effective intervention for weight loss, with people on average losing between 20-30% of their total body weight. The amount of weight lost will varying depending on the type of surgery.

Non-surgical treatments

At Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital, we also offer the Allurion Gastric Balloon programme and weight loss medication.

Allurion Gastric Balloon

Unlike other gastric balloons, the Allurion Gastric Balloon is swallowed like a pill, meaning there is no endoscopic medical procedure required and takes about 20 minutes. With this programme you will receive specialist support to help to maximise your weight loss which is on average a 10% total body weight loss.  Find out more here.

Weight loss medication

Very effective medication is available for weight loss. It works similarly to a naturally occurring appetite regulator in your body called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1)1 and so will help to reduce how hungry you feel. This once-a-day injection can result in an average of 10% loss of total body weight. You will work with one of our specialist practitioners to adapt to the medication, making dietary and lifestyle adjustments to help with weight loss.

Our unique approach to weight loss at Nuffield Health Bristol

Personal treatment is key to our philosophy a which is why you will meet your consultant surgeon first regardless of the intervention you would like. The surgeon will discuss all the weight management options available to you. If you intend to have surgery, you will also meet the dietitian and clinical psychologist so we can understand your experience of weight difficulties as well as consider how the surgery will impact on you and your life. You will be able to plan the timing of the surgery to suit you best.

Depending on your procedure, and the type of support that meets your needs, different members of the specialist clinical team will work with you before and after the intervention to help you to achieve the best possible outcome.
