Our specialist ear clinic in Cheltenham

The Consultant ENT surgeons at Nuffield Health Cheltenham Hospital have set up a one-stop clear ear clinic for the removal of ear wax. Wax occlusion can be very distressing as it can cause temporary hearing loss or the inability to effectively use a hearing aid.

Ear wax removal is often carried out in GP surgeries through ear irrigation, which involves injecting a jet of water into the ear to remove the wax. This is similar to traditional ear syringing methods, but generally less forceful. Both methods can fail to effectively remove the wax and may be uncomfortable.

Our consultants uses a minimally invasive technique known as microsuction. This involves the use of a microscope to provide an optimal view of the ear canal and a miniature suction device to gently remove the wax. It is an extremely safe and comfortable method of cleaning the ear as the ear canal and eardrum are viewed clearly during the procedure. It does not carry the same risks of trauma and infection that can be associated with syringing or irrigation.

Most people tolerate microsuction very well. It is the most effective wax removal method and importantly the safest. The use of wax softening drops such as olive oil, in the few days prior to microsuction, can help with the process. Typically most patients manage to have their ears cleared in one session.

The one-stop clear ear clinic is a rapid access self-pay service and does not require a GP referral letter.
