Our Rapid Access Breast Clinic has been developed to provide a speedy diagnosis and ease the anxiety of any breast concerns such as the discovery of a lump.

The breast clinic is led by a consultant breast care specialist supported by other specialist healthcare professionals including a mammographer and Breast Care Nurse to provide a one-stop service for the majority of patients.

Our breast service is accredited by Bupa and was recently awarded status as a Bupa Centre of Excellence.

Your appointment

At your appointment, you will be assessed by a consultant breast care specialist including a physical examination. If necessary, the consultant may then refer you for:

  • a mammogram (an x-ray of the breast)
  • an ultrasound scan of the breast
  • an analysis of tissue sample taken following a biopsy
  • a discussion with our specialist breast care nurse, if necessary.

You will then see the consultant for a second time. Whenever possible, the results will be available within the same appointment to enable a speedy diagnosis and reduce the anxiety of waiting for results. The consultant will explain the results to you and, if necessary, discuss the options and recommend any further course of treatment needed.

It's important to remember that more often than not the result will be normal and you will leave the clinic with complete peace of mind. If, however, an abnormality is detected you will receive the immediate support of a breast care nurse counsellor and early access to treatment.
