The Cross-Border Healthcare Directive (CBD) for EU citizens

The Cross-Border Healthcare Directive is an EU healthcare initiative that allows Irish residents to receive healthcare in other EU/EEA member states that they would be entitled to within the Irish public healthcare system.

How can I have my hernia surgery at Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital?

If you meet certain criteria, you can have your hernia surgery in Shrewsbury instead of waiting to have it in Ireland.

1)      Acquire an appropriate referral from your GP in Ireland.

You will be referred to our hernia specialist consultant, Mr John Loy, who is also originally from Ireland.

2)      Submit an application to the HSE to apply for treatment funding.

If your application is approved, you will be required to pay for your treatment upfront and then claim back the cost once you have been treated. We will help you submit your reimbursement form when you arrive at the hospital.

Why choose Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital?

Our hospital is a leading private hospital in Shropshire. We pride ourselves on providing the highest standards of care and treatment.

Your consultant, Mr John Loy, will be with you throughout your treatment journey. As you’ll be travelling from Ireland, we’ll ensure that your treatment goes as smoothly and efficiently as possible so that you can make a speedy recovery and return home.

Once your treatment has been approved, our dedicated customer service team will help you make accommodation arrangements for when you’re not staying in hospital and help with travel arrangements.

How long will I be in Shrewsbury for?

In order to treat your hernia as soon as possible, we will arrange for your initial consultation and pre-assessment to be carried out on your first day in Shrewsbury. Your procedure will then be performed a few days later and hopefully you’ll be fit to return to Ireland over the next few days.
