The fibrous tissue that connects your heel to the muscles in your leg is called the achilles tendon. Through overuse or accident your achilles can tear or rupture and may require repair or reconstruction.

What is Achilles tendon repair or reconstruction?

The Achilles tendon is the tissue that connects your heel to the muscles in the back of your lower leg. It can be torn or ruptured through overuse or trauma, and in some cases it may require repair or reconstruction. Achilles tendon repair or reconstruction is a surgery that reconnects the damaged or ruptured tendon.

At Nuffield Health, St Bartholomew’s Hospital, our experienced orthopaedic consultants will perform a full examination possibly utilising medical imaging, to determine the extent of your injury, and they may recommend surgery if the injury does not respond to conservative treatment.

What are the benefits of Achilles tendon repair or reconstruction?

The objectives of this surgery are to repair the injured tendon, improve pain and function of the foot and ankle allowing you to in time return to activities.

Is Achilles tendon reconstruction right for me?

Your consultant will determine if your injury requires surgery or not. Depending on the severity of this injury, some may be managed conservatively. However, some may require surgery.

What happens during and after the treatment?

Achilles tendon repair or reconstruction is usually performed under general anaesthetic. You will meet one of our anaesthetists prior to the operation and the surgery is performed by making an incision at the back of the lower leg area.  Your surgeon will apply a plaster cast at the end of the procedure. After the procedure you will be transferred into the hands of our dedicated nursing team who will look after you in the recovery area and inpatients ward.
