About

Sebastian Dawson-Bowling specialises in all aspects of lower limb surgery, especially primary and revision hip and knee surgery. In his NHS role as Head of Orthopaedic Services at Barts Health NHS Trust, he is engaged in developing a specialist centre of orthopaedic excellence, also researching the development of accelerated post-surgical patient recovery.

Following undergraduate studies at Cambridge University, he undertook specialist surgical training at Guy's and St. Thomas's Hospitals, the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (Stanmore) and Hospital for Special Surgery (New York). He commenced his current post in 2014.

His approach is centred around a firm belief that effective, empathetic communication with patients before surgery is key to both early recovery and long-term success.

He has contributed book chapters on orthopaedics, trauma and medical law to volumes published by Oxford University Press, and has himself published 3 textbooks. He also holds Master’s degrees in Medical Law and Orthopaedic Science. He frequently acts as an expert witness in litigation cases.

He sits on the editorial boards for the journal Bone and Joint 360, and the National Joint Registry, which monitors all UK hip and knee implants, surgeons and hospitals.

Other interests

  • First time and revision (redo) hip and knee replacement
  • Partial knee replacement (unicompartmental and patellofemoral)
  • Knee arthroscopy (keyhole surgery)
