"I have had problems for 8 years. Coughing initially, shortness of breath and indigestion, which gradually became worse. I also had asthma symptoms 4 years ago which included wheezing, hoarse voice and sinusitis. I saw an ENT physician who thought these symptoms were caused by gastric reflux. In the last 4 years, I have had lung function tests, lung scans, gastroscopies and pH manometry tests, which have all proved inconclusive. My symptoms gradually became so bad that it was making my life a misery. I was unable to continue with hobbies such as ballroom dancing and I was so breathless that walking the dog was becoming a problem too. My symptoms got that bad that I was wheezing just going upstairs! I was prescribed steroids and an inhaler for the breathlessness and wheezing. I had also been taking omeprazole for many years and when I had to stop taking this prior to some procedures I suffered terrible indigestion, heart burn and chest pain.
I researched gastric reflux and found an article about Professor Viswanath who performed a procedure called Stretta. I saw my GP about this procedure and he referred me to see Professor Viswanath at Nuffield Health Tees Hospital. My first appointment was in January 2019 where I was advised to have a gastroscopy and a Restech pH study to accurately diagnose my reflux condition. The results showed evidence of significant reflux. I decided to go ahead with the Stretta procedure, which was 6 weeks ago now, and the improvement in my symptoms is unbelievable! I am now sleeping better and not waking up at 5 am with terrible regurgitation and choking. My breathing is much improved and I am delighted to be back at ballroom dancing again. I am still coughing but not as much as I was and my voice is not as hoarse, which my friends and family have noticed.

I cannot thank Professor Viswanath enough; he has given me a new lease of life. Thank you so much."
Patient Testimonial: Inguinal Hernia Repair in July 2019
"Thank you to you and your staff for making my first visit to hospital both successful and as far as possible stress free. From the cheery welcome at reception, the nurse who accompanied me to my room, the anaesthetist, and all the nursing staff I met all in their own way, professional, courteous and friendly. I met Prof Viswanath on three occasions, he was polite, straight talking and answered all the questions I asked. He also appears to have done an extremely good job as I have not taken any painkillers since the day of the operation, I have had no infection and am making an excellent recovery. I feel that I received a 'five star' service from your hospital - well done!"
Patient Testimonial: Cyst Removal in June 2019
"I was recently admitted to Nuffield Health Tees Hospital for the removal of a large cyst on my liver. I found the whole experience very reassuring from the moment I arrived. I felt extremely well looked after, all my questions were answered and all my needs met at what could have been a very traumatic time. The staff, both medical and housekeeping were all extremely attentive and nothing was too much trouble. Professor Viswanath also made me feel very confident in his hands and explained the procedure in great detail.
I would just like you to know how much I appreciated the care I received. The only problem was that, as I was put on a liquid diet, I wasn't able to sample the food which I hear is outstanding!"
Patient Testimonial: Stretta Therapy for GORD with Laryngo-pharyngeal Reflux (LPR)
"It has only been over the last two weeks that I have felt an improvement in my condition. These are not huge, but for me it has been significant and this has given me some hope that my condition will continue to improve. I am of the understanding that because I suffer from LPR (Laryngo-Pharyngeal Reflux) my symptoms will likely take longer to recover than standard GORD. Some reports state that improvement could take 6-12 months and beyond. Although early days, my standard of living has improved and this has helped me focus more on family life and work. I am optimistic and for that I would like to pass on my sincerest thanks to Professor Viswanath and his full supporting team. You have all made a difference to my life and the people in it!"
Patient Testimonial: Stretta Therapy in October 2018
"Since the middle of 2012 I had experienced severe prolonged bouts of acid reflux that controlled my life. The long term affects caused considerable pain and inflammation of the oesophagus and stomach. I was even hospitalised on one occasion because I was unable to keep any food down for a week due to the inflammation. I also experienced waking up in the mornings to a metallic taste in my mouth. Due to this I was on high doses of anti-reflux and pain killer medication including morphine and co-codomal. The health issues I was experiencing interfered with my work, social and home life, I even needed to take considerable time off work due to the ongoing pain I suffered at times.
My husband and I were finding no grace with the mainstream medical profession as I was outside the box. So we did some research on the internet and came across Prof. Y K S Viswanath in Nuffield Hospital, Stockton-on-Tees who spoke of a endoscopic radio-frequency (STRETTA) therapy available for reflux problems. Shortly after visiting Prof. Vis, who answered all of my questions concerning the procedure I went ahead with it and I have not looked back. I found the procedure non-invasive and I had a relatively quick recovery and returned to work after one week. There was some pain and discomfort at first and I was on a liquid diet for six weeks and then soft food for a while, but every step was worth it.
It has now been four months since the STRETTA procedure, I do occasionally use an anti-reflux liquid but otherwise I am off all other forms of anti-reflux medication and all pain killers. I still do consider what I eat and drink but my quality of life has improved 99% and I would recommend anyone experiencing what I suffered to consider the STRETTA procedure. I found Prof. Vis and all the staff at Nuffield very amicable and helpful. The hospital was very comfortable which also made me feel at ease and not so nervous. I am now looking forward to my relatively reflux and pain free future. Thank you Prof. Vis for listening and assisting me with this health issue that has improved my life and future."
