Dr McLaren is a Consultant Psychiatrist with expertise in general adult psychiatry, psychotic illness, addictions, affective disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, cognitive behavioural therapy and medico-legal.

Dr McLaren' main research interests are in Telepsychiatry and eMental Health and has articles and published in peer reviewed literature on this subject. In 2003 he co-edited the first book on the subject of Telepsychiatry and eMental health, published by the Royal Society of Medicine Press.
Dr McLaren has also established and taught modules in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Research Methods and Inpatient services on the Master's Degree in Mental Health Studies at GKT.
