About

Julia is a Consultant in Rheumatology and Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. She has extensive experience in the assessment and management of musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders, exercise-related pathologies, and chronic rheumatological conditions. From 2007 to 2022, she worked as a Senior Sports Physician at the English Institute of Sport (EIS) in Bath, providing multidisciplinary medical support to elite Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

She also holds strategic and educational leadership roles as Associate Dean for Thames Valley with NHS England, contributing to postgraduate medical education and workforce development, and serves as Vice-President of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (FSEM).

Julia graduated from the University of Manchester in 1994 and completed specialist training in Rheumatology, with subspecialty accreditation in Sport and Exercise Medicine, in Oxford in 2006. During her higher specialist training, she undertook a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) at the University of Oxford, alongside a Diploma in Sport and Exercise Medicine from University College London (UCL), focusing on evidence-based approaches to MSK and exercise-related conditions.

She established the Oxford NHS Musculoskeletal and Sport and Exercise Medicine Service, delivering comprehensive, patient-centred care for both adult and paediatric populations. The service encompasses diagnosis and management of soft tissue injuries, overuse syndromes, inflammatory arthropathies, and exercise prescription for rehabilitation and long-term condition management.

At the English Institute of Sport, Julia provided high-performance clinical care including injury prevention, load management, and return-to-play protocols for athletes across multiple disciplines such as athletics, swimming, modern pentathlon, gymnastics, netball, and women’s rugby. Her work involved close collaboration with physiotherapists, biomechanists, strength and conditioning coaches, and performance nutritionists.

Her clinical and research interests include paediatric and adolescent sport and exercise medicine, the Female Athlete Triad and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S), bone stress injuries, osteoporosis and bone health optimisation, and the physiological impact of high training loads. She is actively engaged in clinical research, service development, and medical education, and is a frequent speaker at national and international scientific meetings.

Julia founded the Oxford Sport and Exercise Medicine Training Programme in 2007, which has become a well-established postgraduate training pathway.

Outside of her professional work, she maintains an active lifestyle as a recreational runner and equestrian, with a personal interest in the role of physical activity in health and wellbeing.
