Stroke medicine is the speciality dealing with diagnosis and management of diseases affecting the neurovascular system which includes the brain and spinal cord.

A stroke occurs when the blood flow to part of the central nervous system is cut off. There are two main types of stroke. The most common type (an ischaemic stroke) is when one of the blood vessels leading to or in the brain is blocked. The second type is when a blood vessel in the brain bursts causing bleeding into the brain. A transient ischaemic attack (TIA), often called a ‘mini-stroke’, happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted for a short time.

At The Holly Hospital, we offer outpatient clinics with consultant stroke specialists to diagnose, medically manage and provide post-stroke rehabilitation. Your consultant also has access to other specialists within the hospital and may refer you to one of our consultant vascular surgeons or neurosurgeons, if you require further intervention.

You will usually need to be referred to see a hospital consultant by a GP or other healthcare professional. Speak to your GP and ask them to refer you to the Hospital.
