  1. What is a Referral?

    A Referral is the recommendation of a medical professional such as your GP. A referral is usually necessary to see any practitioner or specialist other than your GP. The term "referral" can refer both to the act of sending you to another doctor or therapist, and to the actual paper authorising your visit.


  2. How do I get a referral?

    You can either visit your medical professional who will provide you with a referral should they deem it necessary. Or you can purchase a referral from our PDS GP.


  3. What if I don’t have a referral?

    Don't worry. If you do not have a referral from a practitioner, we can provide a referral through our private GP service at a cost of £25, subject to approval. Where clarification is needed our GP will call you to discuss.


  4. What happens once I have paid for my Blood Tests online?

    You will receive an email confirmation of your purchase, containing the details of your purchase.

    A member of the PDS team will contact you by phone within 24 working hours (next working day) to confirm your purchase, discuss your referral option and book in your appointment at your chosen Nuffield Health Hospital.


  5. Which Hospitals can I book a Blood Test Appointment at?

    You can purchase blood tests online at 30 Nuffield Health Hospitals and a member of the Pathology Direct team will call you back to book you into your nearest suitable Nuffield Health Hospital.


  6. Who carries out my Blood Test?

    Nuffield Health has qualified Phlebotomists at one of our 30 locations that will collect the samples for your blood test. A video of what to expect from your blood test can be seen on the Pathology Direct web page.

    Tests are carried out in our national network of pathology laboratories and accredited partners.


  7. How long will my phlebotomy Appointment take?

    Your phlebotomy appointment should take around 15 minutes.


  8. Can I cancel blood tests purchased online?

    Yes, please contact our Pathology Direct team to request a refund. Unfortunately, a £10 cancellation fee will apply if you wish to cancel your blood test. This charge will apply once you have received and been allocated an appointment date and time.


  9. Can I amend or change the time of my Blood Test?

    Yes, contact the Pathology Direct team who will be able to help you amend any bookings. Please note: You cannot reply to the confirmation email you receive.


  10. Can I change the location of my Blood Test Appointment?

    Yes, please contact a member of the Pathology Direct team who will be able to help you amend your booking. Please note any booking or change will be subject to availability at the preferred location and we do request that if you wish to change the location that you notify us at least 24 hours prior to your appointment.


  11. How far in advance can I book blood tests

    We can book appointments up to 2 weeks in advance.


  12. How long will it be before I get my results?

    The majority of routine results are usually available within 3 working days. It depends on the complexity of the test and the testing laboratory. If you wish to enquire about turnaround times for a specific test please contact us. Please see T&C’s for full details.


  13. How will I get my results?

    Results are sent by 1st class post and can be sent by encrypted e-mail by arrangement. Copies are sent to the requesting clinician or GP to ensure your medical history is as complete as possible.


  14. What if my results come back positive or outside of the reference range?

    Interpretation of unexpected or abnormal results is best carried out by your GP or referring clinician who will have your full medical history. The value of a having a GP or practitioner referral for pathology tests is that the resulting interpretation. Further testing or treatments can then be discussed. Our private GPs can provide additional consultation on a fee per case basis please see terms and conditions. If the results are a serious concern for your health we will contact your referrer without delay.


  15. I don’t want my GP to know my results – is this OK?

    Yes. However, a practitioner referral is required so that test results and any implications, further testing or treatments can be agreed and put in place.


  16. What tests can I get done through your PDS service?

    We are able to provide the full range of recognised diagnostic tests with sample collection arranged at Nuffield Health hospitals.


  17. Can you do tests on children or those under 18?

    We abide by the Care Quality Commission definition of children and young persons as under 18 years. Yes, we can get tests done on samples from children taken by your doctor. However, the collection of blood and other samples from children requires special training and registration and is not readily available at all of our locations. Please contact PDS directly to enquire.


  18. Are your test prices all-inclusive or are there extras?

    The test price is inclusive. There are fees for our PDS GP referral service if you do not have a referral from your GP or other clinician and if you require our GP service to provide further advice and consultation.


  19. Do I need to do anything in particular before I attend for my blood to be taken?

    No. However, if there are any special requirements, including fasting periods that are required for the tests you have requested, you will be advised of this by the PDS staff.

  20. What is Pathology Direct Service GP (PDS GP)?

    PDS GP are the partner GP’s for the Pathology Direct Service. Warwick Private GP Service have partnered with Nuffield Health Warwickshire Hospital to provide this service. They provide co-location with their excellent facilities.
