Platelet Rich Plasma treatment uses a patient's own blood to promote the healing of injured tendons, joints, muscles and ligaments.
Who is this treatment suitable for?
Depending on the type of injury or condition, there are two types of PRP treatment available.
PRP nStride - suitable for patient's with Osteoarthritis.
PRP Recover - suitable for soft tissue problems including plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, jumper’s knee, tennis elbow and other joint related conditions.
What does the treatment involve?
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatment is an autologous procedure meaning ‘from your own body’ that involves a small amount of blood being drawn from the body before being processed using a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma in the blood.
The plasma is then further processed with a centrifuge to separate a protein liquid, which is injected into the joint to treat pain and slow the progression of cartilage degradation, enabling you to get back on your feet faster.
How should I prepare for the treatment?
Nothing to prepare for this treatment if performed in Outpatients. If you require treatment in theatre your Consultant and the hospital will inform you of what you will need to do in preparation.
How long is the recovery process?
There are no lasting side effects of the treatment, but we suggest bringing someone with you on the day of your treatment.
It is recommended that you minimize your activity level for 14 days (but not to exceed pre-injection levels).
Pain is reduced after just one week and clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of one injection. Studies suggest one injection can last at least 12 months and will delay the need for surgical joint replacements over time.
Specific risk and complications of this treatment
You may experience side effects (e.g., bruising, local pain or swelling) associated with the blood draw, knee injection, MRI or X-Ray procedures).
Alternative surgical treatments are more invasive, carrying a higher degree of risk and longer recovery time. Your consultant will discuss all the options suitable for your condition.
