About
Mr Pavel Akimau is an established Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in foot and ankle surgery.
He has worked at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Foundation Trust (UHNM) since 2021 and is widely recognised as one of the region’s leading experts in minimally invasive foot surgery and advanced ankle arthroscopy. He offers state‑of‑the‑art treatments for both routine and complex foot and ankle conditions.
Mr Akimau provides comprehensive assessment and treatment for a wide range of foot and ankle problems, with a strong focus on modern, minimally invasive techniques designed to reduce pain, support faster recovery, and improve long‑term outcomes.
He is also a leading specialist in total ankle replacement in Staffordshire, offering this procedure to patients with severe ankle arthritis to help relieve pain and maintain as much ankle movement and function as possible.
Innovation and surgical expertise
Since joining UHNM, Mr Akimau has successfully introduced several advanced minimally invasive and arthroscopic techniques for treating:
- Bunions
- Lesser toe deformities
- Calcaneal (heel bone) fractures
- Insertional Achilles tendinopathy
- Chronic Achilles tendon ruptures.
These techniques often result in less pain after surgery, reduced soft‑tissue trauma and a quicker return to normal activity.
Mr Akimau is a recognised regional leader in minimally invasive foot surgery, having undertaken extensive fellowship‑level training.
He continues to work closely with internationally renowned foot and ankle surgeons in the UK, Germany, and France, ensuring his practice remains aligned with the latest developments in international surgical care.

Education, training and academic excellence
Mr Akimau graduated from a highly respected medical school in Belarus, where he completed his early medical and surgical training. He later moved to Japan and earned a PhD in Medical Sciences from Osaka University Medical School, one of Japan’s leading research institutions.
He then completed specialist orthopaedic training in the UK and received his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in 2016 through the competitive South Yorkshire Trauma & Orthopaedics National Training Programme.
This combination of international academic training and UK surgical experience forms the foundation of his precise, evidence‑based approach to foot and ankle surgery.
