About

Mr Alexander is a Cambridge-based Consultant Ophthalmologist with particular expertise in cataract and retinal surgery.

Mr Alexander graduated in 2002 with distinction and a number of academic prizes. He has experience in all aspects of ophthalmology, and has completed advanced subspecialist surgical training in Nottingham, Southampton and at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. He is currently based at Cambridge University Hospitals, and is part of the team running the Stickler Syndrome Diagnostic Service commissioned by NHS England.

Mr Alexander is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and is a member of the British and Eire Association of Vitreo-Retinal Surgeons (BEAVRS). He has over 45 publications in the scientific literature. In 2013 he was awarded funding from the Global Ophthalmology Awards Programme (GOAP) to conduct research into ocular stem cell transplantation, for which he later received a doctorate. He has presented his work at national and international meetings, and at the Houses of Parliament.

In 2016, Mr Alexander was invited to attend the Ophthalmology Honours ceremony at the Royal College of Surgeons, where the Stickler Syndrome Service at Cambridge University Hospitals was given the Judge’s Special Award in recognition of the “highly specialised” and “world class” service that it delivers.

Mr Alexander enjoys going for walks and bicycle rides with his wife and three young children.

Mr Alexander has a strong interest in research and innovation. Current research projects include:

  • The role of silicone oils in retinal detachment repair
  • Psychophysical assessment of the far peripheral retina
  • Clinical and genetic aspects of the Stickler syndromes

In 2013, Mr Alexander was awarded funding from the Global Ophthalmology Awards Programme (GOAP) to conduct research into ocular stem cell transplantation, for which he later received a doctorate. He has received awards from the University of Southampton and from the Oxbridge Biotech Roundtable, and has presented his work at several national and international meetings, and at the Houses of Parliament.

He has published over 45 papers in the scientific literature, mainly in the fields of retinal disease and cataract.
