Macular holes
The part of your eye that controls your central vision (seeing what is directly in front of you) is called the macula. A macular hole is a tear or break in this area.
Macular holes cause blurred and distorted central vision. Left untreated a macular hole can cause a detached retina.
What causes macular holes?
Changes in the vitreous humour (jelly-like substance) inside your eye as you age can lead to macular holes. Other factors such as severe nearsightedness, an injury or detached retina can also cause a macular hole.
What is the treatment for macular holes?
There is a small chance your macular hole will close and heal on its own. However in most cases surgery is needed to improve your vision. Your consultant may recommend a vitrectomy.
