According to the NHS the most common reason for parents to call an out of hours doctor about their child is an ear ache*. Symptoms can include:

  • Fever
  • Pain when lying down
  • Hearing problems
  • Drainage from the ear
  • Dizziness
  • Congestion

Very young children may pull at their ears and refuse to feed as swallowing can be painful.

Treatment for an ear ache varies depending on the reason for pain. Ear aches caused by an infection in the ear may be treated with a course of antibiotics. Over the counter pain medication such as paracetamol can help relieve the pain.

If your child has repeated ear infections your GP may recommend installing grommets.
