About

His undergraduate and initial training was in Wales. He moved to London where he completed his specialist training in 2013, gaining extensive trauma experience working in St Marys, one of London’s most renowned teaching hospitals and a designated Major Trauma Centre. His advanced training included a prestigious UK fellowship in London where he was involved in knee operations on premiership football and rugby players, and a year in Australia working in Sportsmed, one of the countries most successful private sports medicine centres. His training there focused on hip and knee primary and revision surgery and soft knee tissue surgery including arthroscopy, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction and patello-femoral surgery and included computer navigated surgery and other advanced techniques. On his return to the UK Mr Dodds worked as a Knee and Hip fellow in the Royal Berkshire Hospital before taking up the Consultant post in Gloucestershire in January 2015.

He has served on the British Association for Surgery of the Knee executive committee from 2017 to 2022, helping to organise national conferences, and has been involved in a national program to reduce the incidence of knee injuries in children. He is currently lead for knee surgery in Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS. He also provides knee surgery services to Cheltenham Town FC having operated on first team players and also acts as a pitchside sports doctor for some of the first team games.

Special interests

Mr Dodds has a specialist interest in arthroplasty and sports injuries of the knee. This includes arthroscopic (key-hole) surgery for cartilage lesions including microfracture, menisectomy and meniscal repair and ligament reconstruction including anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (hamstring, patellar tendon, quadriceps tendon), posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and multi ligament reconstruction including medial collateral ligament and posterolateral corner.

He regularly performs arthroplasty (joint replacement surgery) including partial knee replacement, total knee replacement and revision knee replacement. He also performs a high volume of primary total hip replacements. He performs other non arthroplasty knee surgery including knee osteotomy and surgery for patellofemoral disorders.

Personal interests

Mr Dodds lives in Cheltenham with his wife and their three young children who keep him busy as taxi driver and side line supporter. He has been involved in grassroots football as a coach for a number of years. He has taken up playing the piano with mixed results.
