About
Mr McCarthy is a Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Leicester Royal Infirmary and has a busy private practice at Nuffield Health Leicester Hospital.
He specialises in vascular and endovascular surgery and trained in Leicester being appointed as Consultant Vascular Surgeon and Honorary Senior Lecturer in 2002. He has substantial experience in carotid, aortic and peripheral vascular surgery with his particular interest being complex aortic aneurysms using endovascular stenting procedures.
Mr McCarthy has considerable experience in both the traditional management of varicose veins and the less invasive endovenous laser therapy technique under both local and general anaesthetic.
Mr McCarthy also treats patients with facial flushing.

Research
Mr McCarthy's research interests are largely in the field of angiogenesis. He has several ongoing research projects including a randomised controlled trial into novel ways of reducing post-operative pain in amputees.
Mr McCarthy is currently the Programme Director of core surgical training and has a major interest in medical education being the director of several locally run courses. He is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England and an external examiner for the University of Dundee Medical School. He is also currently working towards an MSc in medical education and is involved with helping the medical school in Gondar, Ethiopia.
He also has an interest in thoracic outlet syndrome and hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating).
