About

Mr Lawes qualified from University College of London and trained in General Surgery in London.He spent time at specialist surgery units at Colchester Hospital and specialist colorectal units at University College and Middlesex Hospitals, St Mark's Hospital, St Bartholomew's and The Royal London Hospitals. He spent two years as a Lecturer in Surgery at University College London and was awarded a higher degree for his work looking at the genetic causes of colorectal cancer.

After completing his specialist training Mr Lawes spent a further year working at The Mayo Clinic, Arizona, USA, where he increased his experience in laparoscopic and colorectal surgery, being appointed Assistant Professor at Mayo Medical School.

Since his appointment Mr Lawes has been instrumental in setting up laparoscopic collerectal surgery at the Kent and Sussex Hospital and starting the enhanced recovery programme. He has developed the pelvic floor service for patients having difficulties controlling their bowels and runs the newly formed colorectal cancer family history clinic.

Mr Lawes is the Chairman of the local colorectal cancer multidisciplinary team and lead clinician for colorectal services within the trust. In addition he is the Deputy Chairman of the Kent and Medway Colectral Cancer Group.

Mr Lawes has written 4 chapters in international textbooks, 21 research papers and over 40 presentations at national and international meetings on topics ranging from gallstones to colorectal cancer genetics. He continues to be actively involved in research and is the lead investigator for a number of national trials within his Trust.
