Dr David Childs is a Consultant in Pain Medicine and Anaesthesia at Nuffield Health The Grosvenor Hospital, Chester, and the Countess of Chester Hospital since 1989.
Dr Childs qualified in Medicine at Manchester University in 1979, and held junior posts in Manchester and Liverpool in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine, between 1979-85.
Dr Childs trained as Senior Registrar, Anaesthesia, Critical care, Pain Medicine, in the Mersey Region between 1985-89.
He was also an Assistant Professor in Anesthesiology at Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland, Oregon, USA, during 1987-88.
Provides anaesthesia for approximately 700 anaesthetic cases, wide range surgical specialties including approximately two hundred paediatric cases, p.a. He sees more than 1200 patients p.a in outpatients for chronic pain presentations.
Dr Childs also undertakes medico-legal report work as required and participates in GP/public/professional meeting lectures each year.
His Special Chronic Pain interests include: Chest Pain/Refractory Angina, Facial Pain, Lower Back and Leg pain, Chronic Postoperative Surgical Pain, Cervical Spine Pain, Neuropathic Pain (neuralgias, post stroke pain, diabetic peripheral neuropathy), post trauma/accident evaluations chronic pain and disability.
Pain Management includes taking patient history and examination evaluation and assessment leading to medicines review, adoption of personalised medication regimes in conjunction with GP.
Pain intervention procedures include lumbar and cervical epidurals, nerve root injections for arm and leg pain, denervation operations for lumbar facet joint/sacroiliac joint pain, stellate ganglion nerve blocks (cardiac pain) and treatment to painful scars/trigger points.
Role of cordotomy in malignant pain (audit contributor), complex regional pain link consultant and regional guidelines complex regional pain syndrome.
Walking in the Lake District and Scotland as well as gardening.
