About

Professor Hamdy has been a Consultant Urological Surgeon for the past 26 years. He is currently the Nuffield Professor of Surgery & Urology at the University of Oxford, Head of the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, Divisional Director for Surgery, Women’s and Oncology at the Oxford University Hospitals, and Fellow of Balliol College.

He specialises and has vast experience in the treatment of prostate and bladder cancer.   He qualified from the University of Alexandria, Egypt, trained in Surgery and Urology in the UK at Liverpool, Sheffield and Newcastle. He Introduced a multi-specialty robotic surgical programme to Oxford in 2009, and pioneered robot-assisted surgery at Oxford. He was first to perform robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy and has undertaken several hundred procedures since 2009 with excellent audited outcomes.

He was elected Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2007, NIHR Senior Investigator in 2010, and appointed by NHS England as Vice-Chair of the Clinical Expert Group on prostate cancer in 2017.

Research

Professor Hamdy leads one of four Oxford National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre Clusters of five themes: Surgical Innovation and Evaluation, Imaging, Clinical Analytics, Digital Health, and Musculoskeletal Sciences. He was elected Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2007 and NIHR Senior Investigator in 2010, and was commended by the national UK Research Excellence Framework (REF) in 2014 for the strength and quality of surgical research conducted by his Department. He was appointed by NHS England as Vice-Chair of the Clinical Expert Group on prostate cancer in 2017.


His research activities encompass clinical, translational and basic science programmes on the biology of urological malignancies.

He is Chief Investigator of the Health Technology Assessment NIHR ProtecT study on prostate cancer, the largest of its kind worldwide, the PART trial testing partial ablation of the prostate, and the Cancer Research UK ProMOTE study of molecularly targeted image-guided surgery in prostate cancer.

He published over 400 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals (h-index 80), and is Editor of the first Oxford Textbook of Urology. He raised to date over £60 million in peer-reviewed grant for research.
