Mark Emerton is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon working at Leeds Teaching Hospitals in the Chapel Allerton Orthopaedic centre. He trained at Oxford University Medical School qualifying in 1988. Following basic surgical training he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (London) in 1992.
Specialist orthopaedic training was at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford where he was University Clinical Lecturer for 6 years including 2 years of specialist training in hip and knee surgery with Professor David Murray, Mr Peter McLardy-Smith and Mr Chris Dodds.
He was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, with a special interest in hip and knee surgery including arthroscopy, at the Leeds General Infirmary in July 1999. Since becoming a consultant in Leeds he has spent 3 years as Clinical Director leading the development and opening of the new elective orthopaedic centre at Chapel Allerton Hospital.
He was the national clinical lead for hip and knee surgery at the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement until March 2007 and is now working with the Productive Theatres team at the Institute He is also a member of the faculty developing a programme at the NHS Institute to make patient safety a key driving force for improvement in NHS services.
He is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association’s Professional Practice committee which develops guidance and support for the maintenance of best clinical practice.
Mark Emerton’s clinical practice is solely elective hip and knee surgery and he is responsible for more than 400 hip and knee replacements every year.
