John McMaster has been a Consultant Trauma Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Oxford Trauma Unit since 2005, looking after all aspects of bone, joint and soft tissue injury.
Mr McMaster’s higher surgical training in Nottingham, included a Doctorate thesis on ankle and hindfoot injury in automobile collisions. He undertook further Fellowship level training in Canada to develop his expertise in the management of complex bone and joint injury of the pelvis, upper and lower limbs.
Through military and NGO activity Mr McMaster has experience of delivering orthopaedic and ballistic trauma care in austere environments. He was awarded an MBE for military medical services in Afghanistan in 2008.
Specialist Interests: Multiply injured patients and the management of fractures involving the pelvis, acetabulum, hip, knee, foot and ankle. Post trauma secondary reconstruction including the management of fractures that have failed to heal (non-union) or healed in an unsatisfactory position (mal-union)

Mr McMaster held the position of Clinical Director for the Oxford University Hospitals’ Trauma Directorate and led the implementation of the Thames Valley Trauma Network. He is an active member of faculty on national and international educational courses and has been an author and reviewer of international trauma literature.

Mr McMaster has presented and published both nationally and internationally on the subject of Orthopaedic Trauma. He has been a reviewer for the British Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and a Senior Editor for the 2nd Edition of the Oxford Textbook of Orthopaedics and Trauma, 2011.
Mr McMaster has studied the biomechanics of injury in automobile accidents at the University of Nottingham and University of Virginia as part of an 18 month Research Fellowship. He was awarded the Bernard Sunley Research Fellowship by the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and received a Doctorate of Medicine in Orthopaedic and Accident Surgery from the University of Nottingham in 2003.
