About

Dr Nortley is a general neurologist with specialist expertise in neurodegenerative disorders including cognitive disorders, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and motor neurone disease. He provides specialist services for cognitive, memory and motor neurone disease services at The National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery, Queen Square, a part of University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust; as well as Parkinson’s and motor neurone disease services at Wexham Park and Heatherwood Hospital, Frimley Health Foundation NHS Trust.

He graduated in medicine with first class honours from Queen's University Belfast in 2003. During his time at medical school, he won The Musgrave Prize for Pathology, The Foundation Scholarship and The Thompson Medal for Medicine. After completing his first year as a practising doctor at The Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast, he was awarded the Allison Postgraduate Clinical Prize for outstanding clinical merit.

He continued his postgraduate training on the sought after Hammersmith Hospital medical rotation, followed by positions in the liver transplant unit at King's College Hospital, the intensive care unit at St. Thomas' Hospital, and the renal medicine unit at Guy's Hospital.

He then completed his four-year neurology specialist training at King's College Hospital, Guys & St Thomas' Hospital, The National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery, Queen Square and The John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford University Hospital Trust.

In 2012, he was awarded a highly competitive Wolfson PhD Clinical Academic Fellowship to carry out translational research into neurodegenerative disease at The National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery and University College London.


He received worldwide recognition for his PhD work on deciphering how brain blood flow is reduced in Alzheimer's disease. These findings were published in the leading scientific journal Science in 2019. He is now a Wellcome Trust Clinical Scientist researching Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease the Attwell basic science laboratory at University College London.
