Dr Pat Phen is a Consultant Cardiologist at Nuffield Health Brentwood Hospital specialising in cardiology and heart diseases, coronary angiography, echocardiography and cardiac rhythm management.

Dr Phen is a consultant cardiologist who qualified with 2 first class honours in medicine and surgery (MBBS) from Guy’s Hospital, United Medical & Dental Schools, in 1991. Following 3 years of general professional training and passing the MRCP exam, he commenced his cardiology career in London and held training posts at many prestigious teaching hospitals including The Hammersmith, Great Ormond Street and The Royal Brompton. In 2000, he obtained a research fellowship from the British Heart Foundation and undertook clinical studies into the effects of diet and exercise on blood vessel function and was awarded a PhD in Cardiovascular Medicine by Imperial College London. In 2004, a year later, he completed his specialist cardiology training and was appointed Consultant Cardiologist at Basildon & Thurrock University Hospitals (BTUH) NHS Foundation Trust. He was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians London in 2009 and was awarded Level 3 Clinical Excellence Awards in 2010 for outstanding contribution to patient care and service improvement at the local level.

Dr Phen is experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of adult heart conditions such as angina, heart failure, heart murmurs, palpitations and blackouts. He has particular expertise in cardiac rhythm management (CRM) and regularly implants pacemakers, cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) devices and defibrillators to treat people with slow heart rates, heart failure and those who have or are at risk of life threatening heart rhythm disorders respectively. He is also experienced at performing advanced echocardiograms such as transoesophageal echo, stress echo, 3D echo and strain imaging; this expertise highly compliments his CRM device implantation work. Dr Phen regular sees new and follow up cardiac patients in his NHS and private clinics as well as performing weekly ward rounds at BTUH. He also practices at The Essex Cardiothoracic Centre.
