About

Dr Thompson trained in London and was a registrar and research fellow at the Royal Free Hospital. He completed his postgraduate training in the Northern region and was appointed as a consultant physician and gastroenterologist in Newcastle in March 1998.  

Dr Thompson is part of a team at the Freeman Hospital who have developed specialist care of patients with severe malnutrition, especially those requiring parenteral nutrition (having nutrition via an infusion into a vein). Research interests have also included the maintenance of bone health in patients with Crohn’s disease.  

Dr Thompson carries out colonoscopies and gastroscopies, with high success rates as indicated by caecal intubation rates well in excess of 90%.

Dr Thompson has been Programme Director for training registrars in gastroenterology in the region. He was the Clinical Director for Medicine within the Newcastle Trust for 4 years and then one of the Assistant Medical Directors again for 4 years until July 2015. From June 2015 – June 2019 he was Secretary and then Senior Secretary of the British Society of Gastroenterology.

Research

As a Research Fellow at the Royal Free Hospital, London Dr Thompson was awarded an MD for research into possible childhood risk factors for Crohn’s disease.

Previous research grant regarding bone health in patients with Crohn’s disease or Ulcerative colitis.

Current research based around Delivering a Home Parenteral Nutrition service to patients in the north of England and nutritional deficiencies associated with inflammatory bowel disease.
