Why choose Nuffield Health Taunton Hospital for your weight loss surgery?

Our specialist staff and bariatric consultants pride themselves on treatment that considers all aspects of your health and lifestyle. Our team works with you to assess your specific lifestyle, eating habits, dieting history, current weight and medical history.

Weight loss surgery is only the beginning of a programme that can lead you to lifelong change, such as positive lifestyle changes and a boost in confidence.

What is weight loss surgery?

Weight loss surgery reduces the amount of food you can eat by reducing the size of your stomach or bypassing your stomach.

There are several surgical procedures available at our Taunton Hospital that can help you to lose weight and maintain long-term weight loss. These include:

  • Gastric band (lap band): This involves placing an adjustable band around your upper stomach, to make you feel fuller sooner so you eat less.
  • Gastric bypass: This surgery works by making your stomach smaller and bypassing part of the digestive system, so you can only eat small meals and your body absorbs less food.
  • Gastric balloon: A soft, expandable balloon is inserted orally and once it is placed in your stomach it is expanded with sterile saline fluid - that means when you're full, the balloon is too large to pass into the bowel and this makes you feel fuller with less food in your stomach.
  • Sleeve gastrectomy: The stomach is stapled vertically from top to bottom leaving a sleeve-shaped stomach (approximately a quarter of its original size), which results in less food consumption and ultimately weight loss.

Keyhole surgery is performed to minimise recovery time and reduce the risk of infection and scarring.

A non-surgical treatment for weight loss is the swallowable gastric pill balloon, which is the same concept as a gastric balloon, but this one you swallow and then months later it is excreted.

What type of weight loss surgery is best for me?

At your consultation, your consultant surgeon will:

  • Assess your individual needs and risks
  • Discuss which option would be right for you to get the best results.

Weight loss surgery treatments are clinically proven to work, with excess weight loss of up to 50% with gastric bands and up to 60% with gastric bypasses after two years.

Our unique approach to weight loss at Nuffield Health Taunton Hospital

Personal treatment is key to our philosophy and you will meet your consultant (who will perform the surgery) at the very beginning of your journey with us. By getting to know you as a person, how we can best support you, and helping with the highs (and lows), we will ultimately ensure the best possible outcome.

We will discuss all the weight loss options available to you and how to prepare for the surgery itself. Our dedicated team will be on hand to offer expert advice and support both before and after treatment.

Undertaking bariatric surgery is a big decision and not to be taken lightly, but it can help transform the lives of suitable candidates.
