Mrs Helen Herbert is an NHS Consultant Ophthalmic and Oculoplastic Surgeon based at Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust with private practising privileges at Nuffield Health Taunton Hospital.She sees and treats patients with cataracts and general eye problems as well as patients with problems affecting the eyelids, tear ducts and surrounding areas.
Ophthalmology training and experience:
Mrs Herbert qualified in medicine from Imperial College/St Mary’s Hospital, London. She completed her training in Ophthalmology in Cambridge, Liverpool and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London.
After comprehensive training in all aspects of eye surgery, she was selected to do further sub-specialist training at Moorfields Eye Hospital in oculoplastic, lacrimal, socket and orbital surgery.
She was appointed as a Consultant Eye Surgeon to the Bristol Eye Hospital in 2007 where she provided an expert second opinion, often being referred more complex problems by colleagues across the region. She has been a Consultant Eye Surgeon at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton since 2013.
Mrs Herbert is a highly trained and experienced cataract surgeon with a personal touch. She performs modern small incision cataract surgery (Phacoemulsification) and can provide premium lens implants to reduce glasses dependence and correct astigmatism.
She also provides all aspects of eyelid surgery, surgery to treat watery eyes and socket surgery. She has significant experience in the removal of eyelid lesions and eyelid cancers with reconstruction of the eyelids if required.
She is experienced in cosmetic eyelid surgery including blepharoplasty and brow surgery. She also removes eyelid cysts and treats problematic eyelashes with electrolysis or surgery as required.
Other interests
Mrs Herbert has been a member of the European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) since 2013. She has been a member of the British Oculoplastic Surgery Society (BOPSS) since 2009. She was the South West’s regional representative for BOPSS from 2010-2013 and has been on the membership committee since 2013, reviewing and approving all membership applications.
She has a longstanding interest in surgical training. As a trainee she was the vice-chairperson of the Ophthalmic Trainees Group for the Royal College of Ophthalmology. She was the Royal College of Ophthalmology Tutor for the Bristol Eye Hospital 2009-2013, responsible for Ophthalmology training and has been the College Tutor for Ophthalmology at Musgrove since 2017. She has also been a member of the national selection board for Ophthalmology since 2012.
Personal interests
Mrs Herbert has lived in Somerset since 2007 and has two children. She enjoys sailing and cycling with the family.

Research
She has a BSc (Hons) in Clinical Sciences from Imperial College London where she carried out research into the immunology of sepsis. In addition, she completed an MSc in Economic and Quantitative Methods in Healthcare from City University, London with research at Moorfields Eye Hospital into ‘inflammatory eye disease and glaucoma’.
Mrs Herbert has been involved in numerous research projects throughout her career and has experience of both basic science and clinical research. She was an Investigator for the large multi-centre clinical trial for Thyroid Eye Disease (CIRTED) which published its findings in 2018.
She has presented research in the UK, Europe and the US, and has a number of published articles in ophthalmology journals.
