About

Mr Michael Whitehouse is a Reader and Consultant in Orthopaedics, with specialist interests and training in hip and knee replacements and revision (redo) joint replacements. During his training, he obtained degrees in Medicine (MB ChB) and Pathology (BSc), a Doctorate (PhD) in Orthopaedics, and a Master’s (MSc) in Orthopaedic Engineering. He completed two internationally renowned fellowship training programmes in Vancouver and Bristol.

During the course of his training, Mr Whitehouse also completed Research Fellowships with the British Hip Society (McMinn Scholarship) and Royal College of Surgeon, and Travelling Fellowships with the British Orthopaedic Association and the Royal College of Surgeons. He specialises in the non-surgical and surgical management of disorders of the hip and knee, with particular interests in the treatment of young adult hip disorders and the treatment of arthritis of the hip and the knee.

Mr Whitehouse takes a holistic approach to the care of his patients, with the aim of ensuring they are relieved of pain and restored to the level of function they wish to achieve, ensuring his patients are aware of all the treatment options. He helps patients choose the best treatment options for them, with their goals and expectations at the heart of the care he delivers.

Personal interests

Mr Whitehouse has called Bristol his home for over 20 years. He enjoys making the most of everything the city and region have to offer with his wife, who runs a Bristol-based travel business, and their three dogs.

Research

Mr Whitehouse has a very active research profile, publishing over 25 peer reviewed research papers a year. His main research interests are around improving the outcome for patients undergoing hip and knee replacement. This includes surgical innovation, surgical approaches, the outcomes of different types of joint replacement and joint bearing surfaces. He also conducts research into complications associated with joint replacement surgery and methods to reduce the risks of complications.

He has conducted first-in-human and multinational surgical trials, sits on and chairs steering groups and data monitoring committees for national multi-centre trials, and is Injuries and Emergencies Lead for the West of England for the National Institute of Health Research Clinical Research Network. He is a member of the Research Committees of the British Orthopaedic Association and British Hip Society. As part of his research, he is a member of the statistical analysis team for the National Joint Registry, the largest registry of joint replacements in the world. This work allows him to focus on selecting the best performing implant choices for his patients.
