Mr Palmer qualified as a doctor from Glasgow University before moving to Merseyside where he trained initially in General Surgery and then Urology. During his surgical training he was awarded the degree of ChM (Master of Surgery) from Liverpool University for research work on the urodynamic evaluation of bladder obstruction.
He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the European Board of Urology. Mr Palmer moved back to Glasgow in 1997 to take up a post as Consultant Urologist at Gartnavel General Hospital and the Western Infirmary.

In addition to general urology Mr Palmer has specialist interest in Female Urology and Reconstruction. He has a large NHS practice in the treatment of incontinence, offering a full complement of tape and sling procedures, bulking agent and botulinum toxin injections, continent urinary diversion and cystoplasty. His reconstructive service treats urethral stricture, urinary fistula and post cancer surgery reconstruction. He also provides a reconstructive service to the regional transplant unit.
In addition to his clinical activities, he is the Programme Director for Urological Training in the West of Scotland and a member of the Scottish Surgical Training Board.
As well as being an unpaid taxi service for his two teenage children, Mr Palmer plays football on a weekly basis and is a keen angler. He also enjoys wakeboarding when the Scottish weather permits it.
