Profile

Dr Anur Guhan has extensive clinical and research experience in Respiratory Medicine and General Medicine.  He graduated from the University of Madras. He completed his training in Respiratory Medicine in the Nottingham and the Newcastle (Northern Deanery) training programmes. He has been a NHS Consultant Respiratory Physician since 2004. After 8 years at the South Tees NHS Foundation Trust he has moved to Scotland in 2012, taking up the opportunity to be able to set up a district wide Pleural Service in Ayrshire.  
Dr Guhan is recognised nationally as one of the leaders in chest ultrasound and Pleural Diseases. He was the first in the UK to organise formal training for Respiratory Physicians in Chest Ultrasound skills to ensure patient safety during pleural procedures. 

He has won first prize in the NHS Innovation Awards (2012) for Training and Education and has been a finalist in the National Training Awards under the auspices of the UK department of Business, Skills and Innovation.

In 2014, Dr Guhan was invited to be Specialist Advisor in Respiratory Medicine at the new NATS Aeromedical Centre at Prestwick that is responsible for ensuring the health and safety of pilots and air traffic control officers in the UK. 

Dr Guhan offers a very specialised test for Pilots and Air traffic Controllers as per the Civil Aviation Authority guidelines called an Exercise Spirometry Test. This test is also available for patients who want to join the army/ navy or airforce (and have a history of asthma).

Research

Dr Guhan's research experience has been in Airway Pharmacology, Asthma, Pleural Diseases and the Training and Education of postgraduate doctors. He continues to be active in clinical research. His most recent peer reviewed publication was in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in 2012.
