About

Dr Anur Guhan has extensive clinical and research experience in Respiratory Medicine and General Medicine.

He has been a NHS Consultant Respiratory Physician since 2004. After 8 years at the South Tees NHS Foundation Trust he moved to NHS Ayrshire and Arran, Scotland, in 2012, taking up the opportunity to be able to set up a district wide Pleural Service in Ayrshire.

He is a Royal College of Physicians accredited Medical Educator and an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow, as well as a member of the British Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (BSACI).

Dr Anur Guhan is recognised nationally as one of the leaders in chest ultrasound and pleural diseases. He was the first in the UK to organise formal training for respiratory physicians in chest ultrasound skills to ensure patient safety during pleural procedures.

He has won First Prize in the NHS Innovation Awards (2012) for Training and Education and has been a finalist in the UK National Training Awards under the auspices of the UK Department of Business, Skills and Innovation.

Until 2023, he organised a nationally renowned chest ultrasound training course twice a year, based at the University Hospital Ayr, drawing delegates from across the UK and abroad.

In February 2014, Dr Guhan was invited to be a Specialist Advisor in Respiratory Medicine for the NATS Aeromedical Centre in Prestwick. His role was to support the Aeromedical Centre in the assessment and provision of  Class 1, 2 and 3 certification (for Pilots and ATCOs) in accordance with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulations. This title was held until April 2016 when Prestwick stopped being an Aeromedical Centre.

He continues to support AMEs, pilots and ATCOs with the formal respiratory assessments required for medical certifications as per the CAA regulations

He provides the Exercise Challenge Bronchial Reactivity (ECBR) Test to assess asthma control as per CAA regulations. The ECBR test is also offered to aspiring recruits into HM Armed Forces, who have a history of asthma.

He is active in clinical research and has been the Principal Investigator for 4 multi-centre clinical trials, in Ayr. His research experience has been in airway pharmacology, asthma, pleural diseases and the training and education of postgraduate doctors.

He had established a unique, robust domiciliary pleural service in Ayr, where patients with malignant pleural effusions are managed at home with Indwelling Pleural Catheters with trained district nurses visiting regularly to drain the fluid into vacuum filled bottles. This helps patients avoid hospitalisation.

The data and the complimentary patient feed-back from Dr Guhan’s service have been shared with professional colleagues at national and international meetings.
