About

After graduating from the University of Edinburgh in 1988, Prof. Stanley trained in London and Edinburgh, including a two-year post as a Lecturer in Medicine at the University of Edinburgh where he completed his MD thesis in 1998.  He finished his training with a one-year Fellowship at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Australia, prior to taking up his current post as Consultant Gastroenterologist at Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 1999.  He was appointed Honorary Professor at the University of Glasgow in 2018. 

Prof. Stanley has active research interests in Gastroenterology and Hepatology and has published over 120 peer-reviewed papers and several book chapters to date.  He has co-authored four national and international guidelines in the field of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, is a regular reviewer for many major medical journals and has advised both SMC and NICE.  A founder member of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG) Global Health group and the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) International committees, he remains heavily involved in a medical training project in Malawi (2012-present).   He has been elected to several committees of the BSG and was appointed Secretary of the BSG in 2019. 

 Prof Stanley has been an invited speaker and performed live endoscopy at numerous national and international meetings.  He is Director of the annual RCPSG Glasgow-Gastro Conference and is on the organising committee of other major annual educational meetings in Edinburgh and Glasgow.  Prof Stanley was appointed Vice-President (Medical) of the RCPSG in 2019.

Current clinical interests include therapeutic endoscopy and colonoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, gastrointestinal bleeding and chronic liver disease.

Research

To date, Professor Stanley has published over 120 peer reviewed papers in medical journals (17 in the past three years), several book chapters over 200 abstract presentations. He regularly reviews research papers for many journals including Lancet, JAMA and Gut. Professor Stanley is currently Chief or Principle Investigator for several multicentre international research studies.

His current research interests include gastrointestinal bleeding, oesophago-gastric cancer and chronic liver disease. He is a member of the Scottish Society of Gastroenterology research committee, the European Chronic Liver disease research group and the International upper GI bleeding Research Consortium.
