After graduating from Edinburgh University, Dr Stanley worked as a junior Doctor in London and Edinburgh, including a two year post as a Lecturer in Medicine at Edinburgh University where he completed an MD thesis. He finished his training with a one year Fellowship in Gastroenterology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Australia, prior to taking up his current post as Consultant Gastroenterologist at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Honorary Clinical Associate professor at Glasgow University.
He has been invited to advise NICE and SMC on new technologies and drug treatments and was invited to join the RCP (London) Map of Medicine project. He was elected for a three year period to the British Society of Gastroenterology Liver committee. Dr Stanley is currently on the organising committee of the Scottish Society of Physicians and the annual RCPEd advanced Gastroenterology and Hepatology course.
Current clinical interests include therapeutic endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, gastrointestinal bleeding and chronic liver disease. He attends the weekly regional upper gastrointestinal cancer multidisciplinary meeting.

To date, Dr Stanley has published over 80 peer reviewed papers in medical journals (15 in the past three years), several book chapters and numerous abstract presentations. He regularly reviews research papers for many journals including Lancet, JAMA and Gut. Dr Stanley is currently Chief or Principle Investigator for several multicentre international research studies.
His current research interests include gastrointestinal bleeding, oesophago-gastric cancer and chronic liver disease. He is a member of the European Chronic Liver disease research group and the Scottish Society of Gastroenterology research committee.
