This is a procedure to remove your damaged knee joint and replace it with an artificial joint.

What is a knee replacement surgery?

This is a surgical procedure during which a knee joint is replaced with an artificial joint in order to restore function and decrease pain. These problems may appear as a result of injury, arthritis or other bone health conditions.

The most common surgical options for a knee replacement are:

  • Bicompartmental (total) knee arthroplasty, where both sides of the affected joint are removed and replaced.
  • Unicompartmental (half) knee arthroplasty consisting in only one part of the damaged joint being removed and replaced by the surgical expert team.
At Nuffield Health, at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, our experienced orthopaedic consultants will perform a full examination and recommend a personalised plan of treatment for you. Following the assessment and imaging results, this may include conservative management with physiotherapy or surgery.

What are the benefits of knee replacement surgery?

If your consultant has determined that you will benefit from knee replacement surgery then the main expected results will be improved mobility, reduced knee pain and improved function.

What happens during and after the surgery?

The knee replacement surgery is usually performed under general anaesthetic and sometimes in combination with a local nerve block. You will meet one of our expert anaesthetists prior to the operation and will be advised on what is the best option for you if you have never had anaesthesia before. Your orthopaedic consultant will create an incision on the front of your knee and remove the affected surfaces, before inserting an artificial knee joint. After the procedure, you will be transferred into the hands of our dedicated nursing team who will look after you in the recovery area and inpatients ward.

Recovery

Our team of specialist physiotherapists will provide expert treatment, rehabilitation, and advice during your hospital stay. Also, if appropriate, there'll be outpatient follow-up to support your full recovery.

Short-term recovery

You will discuss the length of your hospital stay and any concerns with the consultant prior to the operation and will go home once you are able to mobilise safely and you are medically fit.

Long-term recovery

Your recovery will be guided by physiotherapists and follow up consultations with your surgeon.
