Dr Blaker is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and General Physician, expert in the diagnosis and management of diseases and disorders affecting the oesophagus (e.g. acid reflux), stomach (e.g. ulcers), small and large bowel (e.g. irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, coeliac disease). He offers diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy and is an endoscopy trainer for Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells.
His undergraduate training was completed at Guy’s, King’s & St Thomas’ School of Medicine between 1997 and 2003, gaining both a medical degree and a 1st class BSc in Neurosciences. After graduation he completed a post-graduate training in internal medicine and gastroenterology at King’s, Lewisham, Queen Elizabeth and Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London and at the Royal Sussex County and Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells Hospitals in the South East.
He spent three years (2010-2013) as a research fellow investigating biomarkers predicting toxicity and response to thiopurine treatment in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. This work was completed under the supervision of Prof Jeremy Sanderson and led to the successful award of a PhD in 2014.
He was appointed as Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist to the Tunbridge Wells Hospital in 2014. In December 2018. He became the Clinical Director of Specialist Medicine at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. He is also the Clinical Lead for Inflammatory Bowel Disease at MTW.
