About
Professor Devaraj is a Consultant Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon, practicing at Nuffield Health Exeter Hospital.
Professor Devaraj also specialises in surgery of the Hand and is an associate professor in Medical Education, University of Exeter Medical School.
Having graduated from the University of Leeds in 1982, Professor Devaraj entered surgical training obtaining FRCS in 1987 with posts including neurosurgery and cardiothoracic surgery on the Guy’s Surgical Rotation, then orthopaedics in Leeds before starting plastic surgery in Bristol in 1988. Having obtained the specialist fellowship Professor Devaraj completed senior registrar training at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford and a fellowship in Taiwan before moving to Exeter to practice at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital as Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic surgeon from 1995-2017. Clinical activity included surgery for congenital malformations, skeletal and soft tissue trauma, hand surgery, skin cancer, soft tissue sarcoma and microsurgery. During this period Professor Devaraj had roles as lead clinician, audit lead, chaired at national and international meetings, examined at national level for the Intercollegiate Specialty Board examination in plastic surgery, the UK Diploma in hand surgery and was elected to Council of the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgeons and the British Society for Surgery of the Hand.
In 2013 Professor Devaraj received a national NHS Hero award from Sir David Nicholson, NHS Chief Executive and was awarded the MacLeod Post Graduate Prize in 2015 presented by the Chair of the General Medical Council.
He is the clinical lead for Anatomy at the University of Exeter and is involved with cross platform teaching to students studying medical imaging, medical science and medicine.
42 years since his own student days he would still enter medicine in a heartbeat.

Charity work overseas with Interface Uganda (Reg Charity No 1091419) promotes and develops plastic surgery and training of surgeons in East Africa.
10 working visits with lectures and tutorials, 2001/16, including Rwanda and the Congo. Previous visits to operate, teach and hold the first digest of the Masters in Medicine ( M Med) examination in plastic surgery.
