About

Mr Tom Betts is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the University Hospital of Wales with a special interest in oculoplastic surgery. He manages patients with a full array of oculoplastic conditions including eyelid malposition, watery eyes and diseases of the eye socket. He is the ophthalmic lead at Cardiff and Vale UHB’s Skin Cancer MDT and is part of the department's Botox service. He is also a comprehensive general ophthalmologist and cataract surgeon.

Tom has a passion for teaching and is a clinical and educational supervisor for junior doctors. He also holds an Honorary Senior Lecturer position at Cardiff University School of Optometry & Vision Sciences.

Tom completed his medical degree at the University of Dundee in 2007 and underwent ophthalmology training in Wales. Following specialist registration, he undertook sub-speciality training as a Fellow in Oculoplastics at Christchurch Hospital, New Zealand, and in Glaucoma at Auckland’s Green Lane Hospital. He subsequently worked as a Consultant in Christchurch for a year before returning to Cardiff in 2020.

Personal interests

Tom spends most of his free time outdoors with his young family. A keen athlete, he participates in multisport racing with highlights being competing at Ironman Copenhagen and Challenge Wanaka. He also enjoys dinghy sailing and skiing and is currently targeting New Zealand’s infamous Coast to Coast race.
