About

Mr James Rainsbury graduated from University of Nottingham Medical School and completed his ENT higher surgical training on the West Midlands training programme including Paediatric ENT surgery at Birmingham Childrens' Hospital.

James is a consultant ENT surgeon at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth treating all aspects of general and paediatric ENT conditions and has specialist interests in paediatric ENT, disorders of the ear and balance, and Eustachian tube problems.

He gained fellowship sub-specialty training in Otology (ear surgery) at Victoria General Hospital, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

He was awarded the Intercollegiate Gold Medal for the best performance in that diet of the FRCS(ORL-HNS) examination. His international training has also taken him to the Causse Ear Clinic, Beziers, France, the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, and the IWK paediatric hospital, Halifax, Nova Scotia. He has published extensively in the peer-reviewed literature and presented his work internationally.

Special interests

Mr Rainsbury has a specialist interest in problems of the Ear, Hearing and Complex Ear Surgery, Balance Disorders and Children's ENT problems, as well as general ENT.

He has further qualifications in Surgical Education and is responsible for training and supervising both junior and higher surgical trainees. He is Training Programme Director for ENT trainees in the Peninsula region.

If your symptoms are related to ears or hearing loss, please contact my secretary as pure-tone audiogram (hearing test) may be required prior to your appointment.  Hearing tests need to be within the last 3 months.  If you have already had a test, please bring this with you to your appointment.

I am able to see children of any age in the clinic at Nuffield, however, there is no private children’s operating at the Nuffield (for under 16s).  If your child requires surgery, I will transfer them to my NHS waiting list at Derriford for this.
