About

Mr Ricketts trained in Orthopaedic surgery in the South West Thames region and was appointed an Orthopaedic surgeon at the Princess Royal Hospital in 1994. He specialises in surgery of the shoulder, elbow and hand. His usual elective work concerns Copeland resurfacing arthroplasty, arthroscopic shoulder surgery (anterior stabilisation, rotator cuff repairs, subacromial decompression, ACJ excision). For trauma, he performs more general orthopaedics, but also fracture fixation and hemiarthroplasty work for severe shoulder injuries.

Mr Ricketts has a strong interest in research and training. He served on the South West Thames Specialist Training Committee 1997-2007 and was Chairman 2001-2007. Currently he is a member of the Specialist Advisory Committee which supervises orthopaedic training in the UK, Northern Ireland and Ireland. Mr Ricketts has represented the government in court concerning challenges to training regulations.  He is a consultant appraiser and treasurer of the PRH Postgraduate Medical Centre. He previously chaired his hospital's Risk Management Committee 2001-2002.

Research

Mr Ricketts has published 42 papers, eight abstracts, 44 letters to journals, 16 posters and eleven case reports. His research concerns shoulder surgery (particularly resurfacing hemiarthroplasty and arthroscopic surgery) and orthopaedic training. He continues to lecture on these topics.

He was Regional Research Director for South West Thames 1997-2006, co-ordinating research between 13 hospitals.

Currently he referees papers for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS), Shoulder and Elbow Journal and the Journal of Postgraduate Medicine.

In the past he has undertaken copy editing for the JBJS and International Orthopaedics.

He has assisted in the funding and production of three theses.

He has chaired his hospital's audit and risk management committees.

He was a trustee of the SPRINT charity for research 1997-2006.
