Ajay Malviya is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. He trained in the Northern Deanery and has done specialist fellowships in hip preservation and joint replacement surgery in Cambridge, London and Switzerland.
He is an expert in hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement, trochanteric pain syndrome and periacetabular osteotomy for hip dysplasia using a minimally invasive approach. In his routine practice he deals with sports injuries of the hip and has published and presented widely on the results of hip arthroscopy in athletes and general population. He has completed a PhD on the role of hip arthroscopy in femoroacetabular impingement. Preservation of the hip joint is his principle philosophy but he has a wide experience of joint replacement surgery catering to the young population, if necessary.
In his routine practice he does more than 125 hip and knee replacements annually for all age groups. He also performs around 150 hip arthroscopies and more than 50 pelvic osteotomies a year; making him the highest volume hip preservation surgeon in the North East and amongst the top in the country.
He was awarded the prestigious ABC (America-Britain-Canada) fellowship in 2016 by the British Orthopaedic Association that involved visits to various high profile centres in USA and Canada learning about new systems and techniques.

He is the Editorial Correspondent for Journal of Hip Preservation Surgery and in the steering committee for Non Arthroplasty Hip Registry. He is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association educational committee as the National lead of UK and Ireland in-training examination (UKITE) for orthopaedic trainees.
He regularly teaches in national and international courses for hip joint preservation and also hip and knee replacement.

Mr Malviya is a Senior Lecture in the Newcastle University (Honorary) and is very active in the field of research. He has completed a PhD in the role of hip arthroscopy in the treatment of disorders of the hip. He supervises research fellows and has enabled them to complete various projects and higher degrees.
He has in excess of 50 full papers published in peer reviewed journals and more than 100 presentations in National and International meetings.
He has authored several book chapters which have been published/ under publication on – Evolution of hip arthroscopy; Anatomy of hip disease; Minimally invasive hip surgery; Two-staged revision hip replacement.
