About

Dr Vassallo qualified in 1986 (Malta) and completed his post graduate training in Bournemouth and Leicester. He became a Consultant Physician in 1996 in Sutton-in-Ashfield Nottinghamshire and moved down to his current post in 2001. Medicine in Older People constitutes the majority of his work but there is also a large General Medicine component to his practice which includes acute medical on call. 

Dr Vassallo has expertise and special interest in the diagnosis and management of the spectrum of medical conditions in old age especially dementia and falls and blackouts. His current clinical work consists of managing adult patients of all ages admitted on the acute general medical take, and the various facets of the geriatric service, acute care, general rehabilitation, day hospital, domiciliary visits, outpatients and palliative care. A significant component of his work is management and the day to day running of the geriatrics service particularly in his roles as Foundation Training Programme Director and Clinical Lead. He is also Treasurer and Trustee of the British Geriatrics Society, Clinical Lead for the Specialist Certificate Exam in Geriatric Medicine and Vice Chair of the Specialist Advisory Committee in Geriatric Medicine.

Research

Dr Vassallo received thorough research training whilst preparing for my MPhil (Autonomic Impairment in Elderly Patients with Pneumonia) and PhD (Falls Prevention in Hospital) at Southampton University.  To date he has more than 100 publications and has presented his research at various national and international meetings. He continues his interest in falls and the rehabilitation in old age, and the effects of inflammation on the function of the autonomic nervous system and recently developed an interest in Education research. He has also contributed to writing 2 textbooks as well as writing a number of chapters. He peer reviews for high impact international journals and has been invited to examine PhDs at Newcastle University.
